Personal Development and Employability Programme

The personal development programme will help students gain understanding of the global media market and learn how to stand out. We have decided not to advertise this as ‘employability’ as this might confuse the students whose type of visa poses restrictions to what they can do while in the country.

Employability and Personal Development The personal development workshop series will allow students to learn and develop their inter-personal and employability skills and use different approaches to stand out from the other journalism graduates.

The topics covered will be the following:

Session 1 – Getting to Know You (Personal Effectiveness, Self-Awareness, Skills Benchmarking, and Goal-Setting).

Session 2 – Make the Most of your Stirling Experience (Get Involved, Reflective Learning strategies, Writing your Reflective Journal – Tell your story).

Session 3 – Explore the Global Job Market (How to research the market, Resources & Strategies.

Session 4 – Create your Profile (CVs, Social Media, and LinkedIn).

Session 5 – Create your Pitch (Presentation training, Presentation/Pitch preparation).

Session 6 – Deliver Your Pitch (Practical Presentation / Pitch delivery session, Record & Review, Feedback).

Session 7– Team-building and Networking (What Team type are you, Team Role Activities, Effective Networking Strategies).

Session 8 – Interview Masterclass (Interview Preparation, Interview Practice, Feedback).

Session 9 – What Next? (Action Planning, Personal Development Meeting, Reflective Journal Review).

Learning outcomes – By the end of the module students will learn about self-awareness and improvement of their impact as well as how to explore the global market place. Contact hours: 2 contact hours per week for a total of 9 weeks with Elaine Watson from our Employability service.

Assessment: This module does not have an assessment component to it, but attendance of all 9 classes is compulsory. The classes will take place on Friday morning. Thie skills you develop with this programme will link to the two events we have organised for you: Recruitment Success in China (Ensure job success on your post-study return to China) taking place on Thursday October 11 from 17:00 to 19:00 in Cottrell 3A1. International Student Opportinities (Find out what your options are post-study if you are a student from overseas) taking place on Wednesday November 17 from 13:00 to 14:00 in Cottrell 3A1.
